Earth Day good time to start saving world

Given the enormity of the problems this world faces from an environmental standpoint, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.

While there is a healthy debate regarding how much humans contribute to it, there’s no question global warming is taking place. And anything we can do to reduce emissions is a step in the right direction.

But where do you begin? What can possibly be done to reverse the prospect that polar bears will have less tracts of ice upon which to survive?

We’d all like to have cleaner air and water, but things like cars and airplanes are a must. And as long as they are in use, the air and water will pay the price.

So what can an individual or family do to help out? How can so large a crisis be thwarted?

One person or one family probably won’t change the environment for the better. But one person or one family added to the many who are already doing their part is a good first step.

The answer is to do something — anything — that reduces the amount of trash and pollutants you create. Caring for the environment can start in small ways, like making sure you’re not using electricity when you don’t need to.

Then you can find other ways to be more eco-friendly. Separate recyclable items from your trash; begin a compost pile; walk or ride a bicycle rather than driving when you can.

If enough people start doing something, good changes will occur.

Earth Day, held this week, reminds us that we all share this fragile planet and must do more to tend to its needs.
