Thomas Mangiatini, Sr., 48, shot his wife and two sons to death Wednesday at their Addison home before killing himself, according to autopsies conducted Thursday by the DuPage County Coroner's Office.
Mangiatini died of a single gunshot to the head, and his death has been ruled a suicide.
His wife, Elizabeth A. Mangiatini, 46, died of a single gunshot to the head. Their older son, Angelo Mangiatini, 12, died of multiple gunshots to the head. Their younger son, Thomas Mangiatini, Jr., 8, died of a single gunshot to the head. The coroner's office has ruled these three deaths as homicides.
The Addison Police Department found the family dead in their home Wednesday morning.
Responding to a 911 call, police found a man and women and two boys dead when they arrived at the home, 225 S. Wisconsin Ave., around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday.
At a news conference at Addison Village Hall on Wednesday afternoon, Addison Police Chief Tim Hayden said officers responded to the home after 911 dispatchers received a phone call for help from someone in the house.
“The caller made some sort of statement to the effect that she needed help,” Hayden said.
Officers had to force their way into the house, which Hayden said was secured. One victim was found on the first floor, and three victims were found on the second floor, police said.
John Kruse, a resident of 11 years, lives three houses away from the scene of the murder-suicide.
“They seemed like a typical, normal family,” Kruse said. “Everybody seemed happy.”
Eight-year resident James Vega echoed similar sentiments.
“I would see the kids outside playing,” he said. “I didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary.”
