Robert Maday was found in West Chicago this afternoon and has been taken to a local hospital where he is in custody of the U.S. Marshals.
West Chicago Deputy Police Chief Bruce Malkin said at noon today an officer spotted the gray Jetta Maday was reported driving headed north on Route 59. Maday pulled over in a Taco Bell lot but took off again and three officers chased him for about 10 minutes until Maday crashed at Route 59 and James Avenue, Malkin said.
"He was taken into custody and complained of a back pain injury and was transported to an area hospital," Malking said.
U.S. Marshal Kim Widup said both weapons, one in his waistband, and the money from the Bloomingdale bank robbery were recovered.
"It was a good ending to a potentially bad incident," Widup said.
The name of the hopsital was not released and after Maday is examined and released by the hospital, Widup said he will be taken to a facility with the U.S. Marshals.
"I can't speak how others transport," Widup said. "He will not get away."
Charges have not yet been released.
Bloomingdale Police Chief Tim Goergen said this morning police received a call that the First American Bank, 80 Stratford Square Drive, had been robbed with a hand gun and the perpetrator announced himself as Maday.
“He just went into the bank, implied he had a handgun but did not display it and said he was the individual from Rolling Meadows and the left the bank on foot,” Goergen said.
According to reports, Maday had escaped from police custody Thursday while in transit to a Rolling Meadows court for sentencing for robbery convictions. This morning, Maday allegedly hijacked a car in Hoffman Estates before robbing the Bloomingdale bank.
The perimeter of the bank's parking lot was taped off and police congregated on the side of the building. The building was still on lockdown at about 12:30 p.m., and people could be seen through the windows. The drive-up sign read "closed."
"I have a client who works there and is pregnant. I'm hoping she wasn't working today. It's nerve-racking," said Shari Martino who has worked at Platinum Salon and Day Spa for one and a half years. Platinum is located off of Schick, next to the bank. Martino arrived at work around 10:00 p.m., when the salon opens.
Customer Carmen Iberra said she had no idea what was going on when she arrived for her 10:30 a.m. appointment. She first went to McDonalds, which is also in the Stratford Square Mall area, but couldn't get through to Platinum because the parking lot was blocked off.
Robert Vandergraw has been working at Platinum for 10 years. "I heard about it on the radio on my way here. It was freaky. My first concern was my clients. " Vandergraw said he doesn't believe anyone was hurt.
Numerous area schools announced lockdowns earlier this morning in response to the police search for Maday. School District U-46 announced its precautionary lockdown around 10:40 a.m., but lifted the lockdown shortly before 1 p.m. after Maday's arrest. Glenbard North High School in Carol Stream also had announced a "soft lock down" around 11:10 a.m.
Other districts, including Glen Ellyn School District 41 and Geneva Community Unit School District 304, sent e-mails notifying the school community that they were taking extra precautions in monitoring students and school entrances in light of the situation.
