Four people were arrested Sunday after they crashed a stolen vehicle into a tree while being followed by the car’s caretaker, police said.
Edgar Guzman, 17, Aaron Ortiz, 21, and two juveniles, all of West Chicago, were arrested shortly after fleeing the accident scene on foot at about 9 a.m. Sunday.
Police said the victim reported the black Pontiac Grand Am stolen from the 200 block of North Neltnor Boulevard at about 8:15 a.m. Sunday and said the vehicle had been missing since Friday night. West Chicago Police Department spokesman Chris Shackelford said the car’s keys had been left inside the vehicle.
The victim saw the stolen car at Aspen Ridge Apartments, 1440 S. Neltnor Blvd., about 30 minutes after reporting the theft and began following the vehicle.
He had just notified police of the situation when the car crashed into a tree on the 100 block of Glen Avenue. Five occupants fled the scene and were all apprehended, uninjured, within 20 minutes.
Guzman, who was driving at the time of the accident, was charged with unlawful possession of a motor vehicle, a felony offense carrying a three- to seven-year sentence.
Ortiz faces between one and three years in prison after being charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance.
Charges against two other juvenile occupants are pending. Shackelford said three of the five arrested also apparently committed three burglaries from three motor vehicles while they were in possession of the stolen car.
Police were able to find two of the burglary victims and return the stolen materials.
Officials determined the fifth individual was not involved in the theft or burglaries and are still investigating which of the people arrested were involved in the theft of the car.
“We’re still sorting through all that,” Shackelford said.
The keys had been left in the car at the time of the theft, police said.
