The National Weather Service confirmed Friday a tornado did touch ground in Winfield during Thursday's severe storm.
Also on Friday, Governor Rod Blagojevich declared the counties of DuPage, Cook, Kane and McHenry state disaster areas.
Power outages throughout the area continued to frustrate ComEd employees, with 244,000 customers still without electricity on Friday.
Judy Rader, communications manager, said ComEd is still unable to provide a county by county breakdown.
“We have already restored power to 313,000 customers,” she said. “We’re facing dozens of downed poles and snapped power lines. We’ve even seen trees uprooted and fallen on our equipment.”
Before power is restored, ComEd must replace or repair transformers, wires and poles that were damaged in the storm. Due to the severity of the damage, Rader said ComEd is anticipating a multiple day effort.
Those without power are asked to report the outage by calling (800) EDISON1.
In West Chicago, traffic lights were reported to be out Friday morning at the southern end of Route 59, according to Deputy Police Chief Perez. Reports of fallen trees, power lines and pools of water on the streets are spread out across the area.
The most significant damage occurred Thursday to a wearhouse at 385 Fenton Lane. Several people were injured when the roof of the wearhouse collapsed, and seven were sent to local hospitals. As of this afternoon, all but two of the patients had been released, Perez said.
The DuPage County Sheriff’s Department was reporting one road closure. Frontage Road off of St. Charles between Fair Oaks and Prince Crossing is closed.
