A fire that was possibly ignited by fumes released from a cleaning solvent destroyed the kitchen of St. Andrew’s Golf and Country Club in West Chicago Saturday afternoon.
Despite earlier reports of an employee suffering minor injuries from the blaze, none of the two people in the kitchen and five people in the clubhouse at the time of the fire were injured, said Ron Skubisz, general manager of St. Andrew’s.
The fire broke out sometime between 4 and 5 p.m. Jan. 26 while the floor was being stripped in preparation for a fresh coat of paint. While the West Chicago Fire Department has not determined an official cause of the fire, officials speculate that it may have been caused by fumes from a cleaning solvent that ignited in a grill.
The ceiling of the kitchen was heavily damaged, and the adjoining dining rooms incurred some minor damage, Skubisz said.
“I’m sure the kitchen will need new ceilings, new walls and they’ll have to redo the electric system — there is considerable damage,” Skubisz said.
The Clubhouse, which is a frequently used for banquets, weddings and other events, will be closed until the damage is repaired.
“We’re contacting people that have upcoming events scheduled with us and letting them know that our kitchens will not be open during the timespan of their parties,” Skubisz said.
The club will try to accommodate guests by arranging catering for events that will be held in banquet rooms that weren’t damaged in the fire.
The fire department had not released a total estimate of the damage as of Tuesday afternoon.
St. Andrew’s Golf and Country Club is located at 3N441 Route 59 in West Chicago.
