The faculty of West Chicago Community High School District 94 named senior Katie McLeland for being chosen Student of the Month for February.

They said Katie’s commitment to academics and involvement in extracurricular activities is exemplary. Her coaches suggest she “epitomizes the term student-athlete” and even at an involved level, she has maintained a 4.0 grade-point average, securing her status at the top.

During her time at CHS, Katie has participated in basketball and swimming, earning top honors and area recognition in the latter. Katie has been an Academic All-Conference Varsity Swimmer for all four years. In November of 2005 she was named Athlete of the Month; she was nominated West Chicago Press Athlete of the Week. She also shares her knowledge of the sport with young swimmers, as a swim coach for the West Chicago Sharks.

Katie has also participated the Spanish Exchange Program and National Honors Society, and has been recognized for her involvement as an Illinois State Scholar and a member of the coveted “Who’s Who Among High School Students.”
After finishing a four-year degree in exercise science she hopes to attend medical school for a career in physical therapy.
