Get growing
Winfield Area Gardeners (WAG) members are still on the road and will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, at the home of Kim Koelsch. A representative of The Growing Place will present a program titled “Creating a Container Water Garden.”
In the fall, WAG members usually meet at the Winfield Public Library or another location in the village. Future WAG meeting topics include instruction on fall preparation at the September gathering and a program on ornamental grasses presented by The Morton Arboretum in October. In December, a florist will instruct members on how to create a holiday arrangement using fresh greens, flowers and ribbon. The florist usually provides all supplies for a modest fee.
Peddler’s Market
A two-day Peddler’s Market recently was held at the vacant lot east of Antiques of Winfield, 27W461 Beecher St. Twenty spaces were available, and 18 vendors were selling everything from patio furniture to dolls, tablecloths, pictures, miniature cars, picture frames, lamps, toys, metal footboards, vases, bowls and china plates. Prices were reasonable and sometimes negotiable. A sudden downpour did not faze shoppers or vendors. Many vendors had some type of protection over their space in case of rain. Donna Gabriel, a sales representative, said this was the third year she participated in the event, adding, “It always rains.”
