Winfield, IL -

On the lookout for a woman who always takes time from her busy schedule to work for her community, church, friends and neighbors, Council of Catholic Women members had no trouble this year naming a CCW Woman of the Year.

For years, Harriet Kunesh has volunteered to help others, no matter how small or big the request. CCW members report she is a great asset to the organization.

Kunesh is a past co-vice president and is currently on the board in an appointed position. Using her organizational skills at various events sponsored by CCW, holiday fairs, spring festivals and garage sales are all among her volunteer efforts. Kunesh has three sons — Christopher, Joel and Michael. Joel lives in Cleveland, while the other two live in the area. Kunesh also is a grandmother of five: three boys and two girls.

Kunesh was honored at an annual Woman of the Year Mass April 26 in the Cathedral of St. Raymond. It was celebrated by Bishop J. Sartain. A luncheon recognizing the Joliet Diocese Woman of the Year followed the Mass.

It was great to see Ken Haag in town for a visit from his current home in Sand Point, Idaho. The Haags were longtime Winfield residents and quite active in the community. Haag served on the Winfield District 34 School Board from 1967-76 and the Winfield Public Library Board for the first six years of its existence. He and his wife, Mary Jo, always assisted working behind the scenes at Winfield Historical Society functions.

Joyce and Clem Milder welcomed twin grandsons, Robert and Finian Milder, sons of Jim and Laura Milder of Delmar, Calif. The Milders made a quick trip to California for the twins’ baptism.

I’m happy to report Ellen McGrath not only made a rapid recovery from recent surgery, she was feeling so good she made a short trip to Texas.

Mary Lou and Jack Kozak welcomed granddaughter Mia Nicole McCall, who has been nicknamed M&M. To announce the arrival of their new sister, older brother Jack and older sister Jessica took packets of M&M’s to school to share with their classmates.

After their first round of play in the Winfield Golf League, Chris Stone and Don Jeschke are tied for first place with 8.5 points. Ken Jepson is a close second with 8 points.

Not only was Winfield Golf League’s opening day chilly, but it was also wet. Only two golfers, Matt Dixon and Tom Wiedner, finished play, reported John Otto, league secretary.

Golfers scheduled to play their opponents opening day played the same opponents the following week.

During the first week of play, Bob Welsch made the closest to the pin shot. Jerry Palmere made the longest putt.
