Winfield, IL -

What a miserable day for Boy Scout Troop 575’s plant pickup May 3 — chilly and rainy as well.

The Scouts sold a lot of plants, but not enough to buy all the tents the troop needed. The Scouts need to buy about 20 new ones.

Most of the current tents are more than 10 years old, said troop volunteer Patti Eganhouse, adding that the majority have seen better days because the 50 Scouts have eight to nine campouts a year. The Scouts need to replace the old tents with four-season tents.

Troop 575 participated in the Three Fires Council BSA Scout-O-Rama at Cantigny from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 10. The troop worked the Tomahawk Station.

Troop 575 will take part in Memorial Day ceremonies at Creekside Park. They will continue on to march in the Wheaton Memorial Day Parade later that morning.

Most Troop 575 Scouts are older than 10 and come from Winfield, Wheaton, Warrenville, West Chicago, Glen Ellyn and Wayne.

At their May meeting, Winfield Area Gardeners members learned about annuals with the program “Three Seasons of Color” by speaker Sandy Lentz, who focuses on the planning and planting of colorful annuals to give gardens three seasons of color.

Lentz has not only been a master gardener since 1999 through the University of Illinois Extension, but is also a volunteer/board member at the Oak Park Conservatory and writes a column about herbs for the master gardeners’ bi-monthly newsletter.

Winfield Area Gardeners’ annual plant exchange will be Tuesday, June 3, and only paid-up members may participate. Gardeners are reminded to start potting now so their plants will have plenty of time to get strong and healthy before the exchange.

WAG members will plant the Gazebo Gardens at Creekside Park May 24.

Members welcomed new publicity chairwoman Marion Robbins. They are looking for someone to coordinate field trips. The position is described as a small, but important job to organize field trips and special events for club members. If interested, contact WAG President Patti Ryan at (630) 653-1710.

Members also welcomed three newcomers: Joan Haas, John Liptak and Marc Hejna.

Although Good Old Days is not until September, members already are thinking about fun ideas for WAG’s annual plant and bake sale. A hula hoop contest could be in the works since this year’s theme is “1968: 40 Years Remembered.”
