Winfield Lions Club conducted its first Putt Putt sight fundraiser June 22. Registration took place at Brian’s Charhouse, 27W371 North Ave., West Chicago. At 5:30 p.m., a shuttle bus transported participants to Coyote Crossing Miniature Golf for a round of the most challenging 18 holes in the Midwest. Refreshing beverages were provided to the golfers, who afterwards were shuttled back to Brian’s. Among the service organization’s projects, the Lions Club organizes fundraisers that support children and adults in need of eyeglasses.
Luau
A Volunteer Appreciation Dinner with a Hawaiian theme will take place after the 5 p.m. Mass Saturday, June 28, in St. John’s Sebahar Hall on the lower level of the new church on Liberty Street. St. John’s Knights of Columbus will roast nine pigs. There will be hula dancing, and prizes for such categories as the limbo dancer who can go the lowest and the person sporting the craziest Hawaiian shirt will be awarded.
Good Old Days
It doesn’t seem possible, but the annual Good Old Days celebration is only months away, unfolding from Thursday through Sunday, Sept. 4 to 7. Among the highlights, Winfield Historical Society members will conduct a walking tour in downtown Winfield.
A headliner band will play in the Lions Club Beer Garden from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6; the band will be sponsored by Central DuPage Hospital. Keith McClow of Klein Creek Farm will offer the “building of a barn” project for children Sept. 6.
Miss Illinois USA, Shanon-OK Lersch, will make an appearance at 1:15 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, instead of the usual Saturday, so she can appear in the annual Good Old Days parade. Winfield Chamber Executive Director Rich Bysina hopes to provide her with a microphone in the car so she can invite onlookers to attend the championship rounds of such games as the new Armchair Quarterback Passing Contest and the revived Underhand Free Throw Contest. Lersch is one of the Luvabulls. The Winfield Park District will loan the chamber one of its two bleachers for spectator seating. Bysina has been working to arrange sofas for the Armchair Quarterback Passing Contest. Mary Lee Geraghty of Path Cycles donated a sofa and furnishings. A console television set was donated by Lundy Moran of Winfield in Action.
Acting, improv workshop
Winfield Public Library will offer an acting and improv workshop for teens ages 13 to 18 at 2 p.m. Friday, July 11. Professional actress and theater professor Amelia Barrett will lead participants in improvisational games and exercises designed to help teens work with others and embrace the moment as they improve their acting skills.
The finale of the library’s summer reading program, “Get in the Game: Read,” will be a prize drawing Wednesday, July 30. Children’s prizes will be awarded at 7 p.m., and young adult prizes will be given out at 7:45. Nucia Choate, juvenile librarian, Ralph Treccia, president of Winfield Community Bank and Katie Clark of Library Friends will present the prizes.
Field trips
Winfield Area Gardeners members have planned a series of summer field trips, which kicked off June 18 with an excursion to Cantigny Park, departing from the Winfield Public Library parking lot. The next program, “Fresh Flower Designs in Red, White and Blue,” will begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 1, at the Cantigny Visitors Center. Once again, members will meet in the library lot, 9S291 Winfield Road. They are advised to eat lunch before the trip. A tour of Ball Seed, a 7.5-acre site in West Chicago, is planned from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3. A $5 donation per person will be required for the Garden Conservancy. Master gardeners will be on hand to answer questions. It is suggested that members bring drinks, insect repellent, pencils for notes and sunscreen.
Father’s Day fete
Last month’s Young at Hearts meeting was a Father’s Day party. Coordinator Kathy Skrobutt asked members to bring a dish for summertime meals to share at lunch. Donations were accepted if members didn’t cook or had other commitments.
