Winfield, IL -

Winfield Historical Society members will host their annual meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 15, at the Winfield Public Library, 0S291 Winfield Road.

At 7:30 p.m., a slide program on “Images of the Roaring Twenties and the New Woman” will take a step back in time to one of the most exciting periods in U.S. history, the 1920s. The decade is best remembered for scandalous fashions, revolutionary jazz music and amazing new freedom for the newly “liberated” women, known as “flappers,” whose rebellious attitude inspired risqué, flashy fashions, unorthodox behavior and a demand for equality.

Classic golf outing

St. John’s Parish will present its 11th annual Golf Classic on Friday, May 16 at St. Andrews Golf and Country Club, 3N441 Route 59, West Chicago. Last year, the event raised more than $6,000 for St. John’s School.

In order to meet or exceed last year’s spectacular showing of support, donations are needed from parishioners. Anyone who has a vacation home, timeshare rental or sporting event tickets and would be willing to donate these to the live auction taking place that evening would be appreciated.

Contest winners

More than 146 St. John School students in kindergarten through eighth grade participated in the Abuse Poster contest sponsored by St. John’s Knights of Columbus. Overall winners of a $100 U.S. Savings Bond were: Olivia Joseph, fourth grade, and Anna Spatz, eighth grade. First-place winners were Olivia Joseph, fourth grade; Brad Cwik, fifth grade; Kristen Von Bampus and Christina Fiord Rosa, both sixth-graders; and Anna Spatz, eighth grade. Second-place winners were Kate England, fourth grade; Katie Schram, fifth grade; Miranda Danner and Samantha Dubiel, both sixth-graders; and Mandy Lancia, eighth grade.

Special thanks went to St. John’s School Principal Julie Tobin for her assistance.
