St. John’s Knights of Columbus recently hosted its annual volunteer appreciation dinner following a 5 p.m. Saturday Mass.
The luau-themed event drew more than 185 people. Setting up and preparing the 270-pound pig on an outdoor spit on the church grounds were Knights Bill Brach, John Otto, Dan Maida, Lonnie Howard, Urban Oen, Sean Conley, Bob Petitti, Bernie Madden, Dan Conley and the Daniell family: Jean, Alec, Emma and Molly.
To add flavor, the pig was filled with apples, oranges and onions. Knights volunteered to staff two-hour shifts to watch over the pig and ensure it did not fall off the spit.
Sebahar Hall was decorated with palm trees and other Hawaiian artifacts by Decoration Committee members Julie Brown, Maureen Brennan and Andrea Krueger.
Food Committee members Selene and Scott Miller, Nancy and Tim Kinsley, Janelle Miller and Carol Schroeder served shrimp with dipping sauce, meatballs, cole slaw, potato salad, salad and a large urn of sangria, along with soft drinks and coffee.
The Entertainment Committee team of Karen Flynn and Andrea Krueger kept everyone moving, thanks to the talents of hula dancer Nikki Guevarra of May I Have This Dance Studio. Not only did Guevarra perform hula dances, but she also gave lessons to several men and women who donned grass skirts to get in the proper mood. Wearing an authentic grass skirt for added swivel was Bob Petitti. It was one his wife, Christine, had brought back from a visit to Hawaii.
The award for Craziest Hawaiian Shirt went to Jackie Madden, who received a horseshoe set. Capping the evening was a hula hoop contest in the church’s east parking lot, which featured lots of hula hoops and not many contestants. The winner was Therese Strong, who won a portable cooler. Going lowest in the Limbo Dance Contest was Bob Camp, who earned a beach chair.
The dinner guests were honored for the time they donate to volunteer work throughout the year. Sharing accolades were members Bev and Bill Brach, Nancy and Dan Babcock, Joyce and Clem Milder, Joan and Dick Murdock, Ellen and Mike McGrath, Lorraine Talz, Jim Rieck, Rosemary Laschober, Mary Lou and Jack Kozak, Christine and Bob Petitti and Tom Janczy.
