Eight area chambers of commerce met for a Multi Chamber Progressive Luncheon last month. The Winfield Chamber gathered with fellow members from Addison, Bartlett, Bloomingdale, Carol Stream, West Chicago, Warrenville and Wheaton. The luncheon had a polka-dot theme, and while no gambling was involved, participants had fun determining which table to move to by rolls of the dice. The luncheon was at the Holiday Inn in Carol Stream. Diane Meyers and Debbie Franzese of Winfield Community Bank co-chaired the luncheon, which was a record-setter for such an event: 151 guests, including 136 women and 15 men.

Bridal showers are fun — it’s great to hear about the wedding plans, how many are in the wedding party, and what the bridesmaids and mothers of the bride and groom will wear. Mary Lou Kozak invited 38 guests to a bridal shower for Erin Madden last month. The bride-to-be broke about four ribbons while opening gifts, much to Erin’s delight. Gifts included pots, pans and cookie sheets complete with a dripper handle. Bakers fill the dripper with cookie dough and drop it on the pan so that cookies are all the same size and density, lowering the risk of burnt cookie bottoms. Among the other gifts were a queen-sized beige quilt; stainless steel four-slice toaster; nesting bowls; canister set; steam iron; green afghan blanket; Target gift card; towels; bamboo cutting board; three-piece mixing bowl set; colander and bag clips. Everyone brought a favorite recipe to share with Erin’s mother, Jackie, who encased them in a one-of-a-kind plastic cookbook. After all the gifts were opened, Mary Lou served a fabulous feast: three chicken casseroles, spinach and fruit salads, yellow coconut cake, almond cake and apple bars. Erin will wed Brad Sabathne in a church service in mid-July.
Karen Brearley is a new grandmother. Daughter Linda gave birth May 12 to Michael Christopher, who weighed 7 pounds, 10 ounces. Michael has two older brothers, Evans and James, to help take care of him.

St. John’s parish will have a Vacation Bible School from 9 a.m. to noon June 23 to 27. The cost is $25 for each child. Students will create crafts, listen to music and play games. Teens will have a pool party. This year’s theme is “God’s Backyard: Have a blast serving Jesus.” Of course, to make Vacation Bible School a success for the children, volunteers are needed to help in the kitchen, teach crafts, make music, babysit and decorate. For information, call (630) 682-4400.

On the road
Winfield Area Gardeners took to the road for the June 3 meeting. It was a plant exchange for members only. Members could choose from dozens of indoor and outdoor plants labeled for sun or shade; newer members had first choice. Members met for the first on-the-road meeting at WAG president Patti Ryan’s home in Wheaton. Thanks were extended to Dawn Harrington and Barb Klein for bringing treats to the May gathering. Joan Mruk and Mary Lou Crane provided snacks for the June meeting. The Riverwalk Committee presented a slide program on what the committee has accomplished since it was formed last year by Rudy Czech, village president. Committee member Cyd Paulson also was available to answer questions.
