There will be some changes in this year’s Good Old Days celebration which runs from Thursday to Sunday, Sept. 4 to 7.
New this year, Winfield Lions Club will have an expanded beer garden tent with several bands providing the entertainment.
For the first time, visitors will be able to go outside of the tent and enjoy their beer in a larger designated area. A Ferris wheel will be included in the annual carnival rides. A prize plaque will be awarded to the best of show in the annual Good Old Days parade (with a 1968 theme) Sept. 7.
Serving on the Parade Committee are Cindy Keck, Paul Stevenson and chairwoman Carlyn Kimmel of Central DuPage Hospital.
Many activities will take place Sunday, Sept. 7 in Creekside Park, east of Winfield Road, south of Beecher Street. Winfield Area Gardeners will have their annual plant and bake sale.
Food Court Committee members Dan Keck and Regina Czech are expecting to expand the food options. Also, the Ladies Shoe Kicking Contest will be reintroduced in the park.
The first-ever shopping cart races for adults and children will be at the Church Street parking lot.
Winfield United volunteers will have kids’ games, including the uniquely entertaining minnow races.
Other activities for all ages are sack races, water balloon tosses, demonstrations and contests.
Winfield Junior Woman’s Club members will do face painting, serve root beer floats and sell bottles of water.
Officers installed
St. John’s Knight of Columbus nominating committee recommended a slate of officers for the 2008 year. Elected were Grand Knight Loni Howard; Deputy Grand Knight Urban Oen; Chancellor Sean Conley; Recorder Vince Kelly; Advocate James Rieck; Warden Jack Kozak; Inside Guard Rich Kamphaus; and Outside Guards Bernie Madden and Robert Pettiti.
Scholarships
Eight graduating Winfield high school students, as well as college undergraduates, each received a record $2,000 from the Winfield Chamber of Commerce’s Walter Schauer/Dollars for Scholars Scholarship fund.
Thanks go to the scholarship committee members — Karen Blum, Coldwell Banker Brokerage; Patty Shupp and Linda Chirirkos, both of Realty Executives Premiere; and Kathe Doremus of Community Bank Wheaton/Glen Ellyn — who made it possible, and all the members who bought tickets at various chamber functions throughout the year. The chamber has been donating the scholarship awards for the past 20 years.
Presentations were made to: Jimmy Gates of St. Francis High School, whose mother, Kelly, attended the luncheon; Rebecca Groesbeck of Butler University in Indiana; Michelle Heron of Northern Michigan University, who could not attend the luncheon; Jacqueline Hurd of Wheaton North High School, who could not attend the luncheon; Jeffrey Hlinka of West Chicago High School, who attended with his father, Jim; Benjamin Knieman of Benet Academy in Lisle; Michelle Koch, Northern Illinois University, who could not attend the luncheon; and Karen Taylor, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Winners also enjoyed a free lunch from Oakfield Restaurant.
The menu included chicken breast with rice, roast sirloin beef or baked tilapia, salad, and coffee, iced tea or soft drink.
Chamber Executive Director Rich Bysina had another surprise for each of the scholarship winners — an envelope with two tickets to the June 16 White Sox game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Touch-a-Truck
One of the most popular programs for children offered by the Winfield Park District is Touch-a-Truck.
Children of all ages have the chance to look at, touch and climb on all kinds of trucks that travel on all roads through towns.
Children can attend the program from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2. For information, call Kim Naydenoff, recreation director, at (630) 653-3811.
Memorial Day
Boy Scout Troop 575 observed Memorial Day at 7 a.m. Monday May 26 at the War Memorial near the Winfield Creek bridge in Creekside Park.
Good weather also allowed St. John’s Church to have a Memorial Day service at St. John’s Cemetery, Summit Drive and Gary’s Mill Road.
