In observance of Constitution Day, Sept. 17, Young at Hearts presented a Flag Day luncheon party hosted by Joann Busch. The menu featured sloppy joes and chicken tenders made by coordinator Kathy Skrobutt; Alice Besch’s Hawaiian cream Jell-O mold; Jean Borisuk’s always popular mini-hot dog appetizers wrapped in dough; Bev Brach’s three-bean salad; Carol McPheters’ vinegar cucumbers; Rosemary Laschober’s corn pudding; and what Joann Busch calls a health salad, coleslaw prepared with vinegar instead of mayonnaise. Members and guests brought dishes to pass for the potluck.

On Sept. 17, 1787, the Constitution was signed by the U.S. Constitutional Convention. Originally, the observance started out as Citizenship Day, under a bill signed by President Harry Truman.

Red, white and blue were the party’s dominant colors. The buffet table sported bright blue tablecloths at each end, with a red, white and blue-checked tablecloth in the middle. On each of the six tables, a blue placemat bore a red ceramic holder or red basket filled with flowers and a small flag. A glass vase filled with a cascade of silver, red and blue stars made an attractive centerpiece on the serving table. After lunch, many members played cards and games.

Skrobutt requested that members collect names of birthday and anniversary celebrants, picking the ages of 80, 85, 90 and 95 for birthday observances and anniversaries of 50, 55, 60 and 65 years. The information may be brought to the Wednesday, Oct. 15, meeting or phoned to Skrobutt at (630) 293-7922. In October, the main entrée will be broasted chicken, and members will bring a dish to pass. Nurse Diane McGuire was not available to take free blood pressure readings last month.

New vendors

Two new vendors opened at the Farmers Market last month. Ella sells a variety of crocheted products and will be at the market until season’s end. Smitty, only there for one day, sold White Sox and Chicago Cubs merchandise.

Business launches

A new enterprise opened its doors at the site of the former Backdoor Salon, 0S104 Winfield Road. It is called Infinity Salon and is operated by five young women — Jennifer, Candy, Jackie, Mary Beth and Dora. The salon had its grand opening Sept. 20, featuring refreshments and door prizes.

Jay Patel, franchise owner of 7-Eleven, thanked everyone who visited the store during its grand opening, despite the rain. The store is open 24 hours a day to serve Winfield residents.

WAG news

Donna VanBonCoeur of Winfield Area Gardeners notified members that planting at Creekside Park was canceled because of excessive rain during the Sept. 13 weekend. The planting was rescheduled to the end of September. Karla Lynch of Morton Arboretum discussed ornamental grasses at WAG’s Oct. 7 meeting.

Library events

Organizing for Everyone is a program offered by the Winfield Public Library on tackling household paper clutter and kitchens and closets. It will be presented at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, and no registration is necessary.

A sock-puppet craft workshop will be offered by the library from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1. Children ages 6 to 12 may bring a spare sock and imaginative ideas to create a fun puppet; registration is required by calling (630) 653-7599.

Contest winner

Winfield Executive Director Rich Bysina was one of the finalists in the Underhand Free Throw Contest hosted by Boy Scout Troop 575 during Good Old Days. Bysina relinquished the prize of a new basket, saying it wouldn’t look right to win a prize for a game he created for the festival. Actually, he took the microphone from Illinois Miss USA Shannon Lersch who was announcing the championship round.

Church picnic

Now that the rain has stopped and electricity has been restored on Winfield Road, Winfield Community United Methodist Church volunteers will have their annual Founder’s Day Picnic on Saturday, Oct. 11, at the home of Mary Ann and Ron Barzo. Bratwurst and other sausages, German beer and wine will be served. Members are asked to contact WU President Steve Romanelli, so volunteers can buy enough food. Guests should bring a side dish to pass for no more than eight people. During the gathering, members will be asked for input on candidates for the April 2009 Village Board election. Either a movie or the baseball playoffs will be shown on the big screen at 9 p.m.

Chamber election

Election of four directors to the Chamber Board, each for a three-year term from 2009 to 2011, will take place at Candidates’ Night on Tuesday, Nov. 18, with time and place to be announced.

Volunteer coaching

New volunteer coaches or those who have let their National Youth Sports Coaches Association volunteer coaching lapse must go through the process again this year. Coaches can call Mike at (630) 653-3811, Ext. 116, to reserve a spot in one of two workshops: 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursdays, Oct. 16, or Nov. 6, at the Charles R. Beggs Activity Center, 0N020 County Farm Road, Winfield.
