What: The Arts and Crafts Influence on the House and Garden House Walk sponsored by the Frederick Law Olmsted Society of Riverside
When: Noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 18
What you’ll see: A bus will take participants through the north and south sides of Riverside — one of the first planned communities in the United States — to six homes and the Coonley Estate that reflect the influence of the American Arts and Crafts movement of the late 20th century during the walking tour. The styles of Frank Lloyd Wright and landscape artists such as Jens Jensen are among other prominent 20th century architects whose work will be on display in the form of natural materials. Look for stained-glass windows, unique fireplaces, porches, and prairie and bungalow style houses, which tend to complement rather than impose on their natural surroundings — a tenet of the Arts and Crafts influence, according to Kim Jacobs, co-chair of the house walk event.
Attraction: Sander Kaplan’s prairie style abode at 283 Scottswood Road was built in 1910 to house four teachers and a maid. Five years ago, Kaplan and his wife bought the house that was near demolition and restored it, but kept its historical influences intact.
“When we redid the cedar shake roof, we based it on the original we saw in old photographs,” said Kaplan, an architect. “Our house has a lot of simple details that add character.”
The house boasts three balconies, three fireplaces and an enclosed glass verandah that capture Frederick Olmsted’s ideal that every residence should have an adequate view of nature. Other houses on the walk have a lot of the original wood intact and Arts and Crafts hearths.
Benefiting: All proceeds will go to the Frederick Law Olmsted Society, which uses the proceeds to maintain and restore the village of Riverside.
Tickets: $35 per person in advance, $40 per person on the day of the event. For advance ticket locations visit olmstedsociety.org.
