Darien -

A chain reaction accident caused a 300-foot tower used for Internet communications to fall on a tanker truck Wednesday morning on Lemont road near the Darien and Woodridge border, closing traffic between Internationale Parkway and 103rd Street. The tower and truck have been removed and all lanes are now open, according to Woodridge Police.

Police and fire officials said no one was injured in the incident which occurred around 8:15 Wednesday morning, but about 1,000 rural business customers downstate are without Internet service.

A two-car collision on Lemont Road started the incident as one of the cars ran into a support wire holding the tower up, according to fire officials.

The tower then fell on a tanker truck which was headed south on Lemont Road. The tower landed behind the driver's cab and in front of the tanker. The tank was not breached and no benzene leaked out.

According to a fire official, had the driver been one second slower or one second faster the driver would have been injured or the tower would have fallen on the tanker part of the truck, possibly igniting the liquid.

ComEd officials, as well as the Lemont Fire Department, Woodridge police and DuPage County Sheriffs are on the scene. The Woodridge Command vehicle arrived at about 10:45 a.m.

A Gas City gas station located across the street at 10250 Lemont Road, Darien, lost power as a result of the incident, and traffic signals in the area are non functioning as well.

Paul Igyarto just started working at Gas City last week, and witnessed the accident.

"I was outside sweeping, and I heard a loud crash. I thought it was one of the semi trucks going over the railroad tracks, but then I looked back and saw the car crash into the wire," he said. Igyarto said there was a shower of sparks when the tower fell over the power lines nearby.

Five year employee Audon Gonzalez said he called 911 to report the accident, and fire officials arrived within 5-10 minutes.

Greg Olson, an official with Clear Sky Systems, arrived to the scene to check on some equipment the company has attached to the tower. Clear Sky provides Internet to rural customers further South.

"They told me Internet service was down. I thought maybe the system needed to be reset. It looks like it's going to take a lot more than a reset," said Olson, eyeing the downed tower. He said he may try to divert internet service from another nearby tower.

According to the Lemont Fire Department, police are diverting traffic from Deer Path Lane on the south to 101st Street on the north.
