DuPage County, IL -

A trial is underway in DuPage County Circuit Court for a man accused of shooting at three Lombard police officers, injuring one, after he stole a bottle of vodka from a Jewel-Osco store in 2004.

Paul Grygo, 59, opened fire on the three officers with a .38-caliber handgun on Sept. 2, 2004, when they came to his apartment at 2201 S. Grace St. to investigate the theft.

Lombard police officer Jerry O’Meara was shot in the shoulder, ending his 13-year career.
Grygo is charged with multiple counts of attempted murder of a police officer and aggravated discharge of a firearm at a police officer. If convicted, he could be sentenced to life in prison.

His attorneys are expected to argue that he is mentally ill.

The trial before DuPage Circuit Judge Kathryn Creswell could wrap up Friday.
