Illinois Appellate Court Presiding Judge Robert E. Byrne will administer the attorney’s oath Thursday to 47 new lawyers who will be admitted to practice law in Illinois in Elgin.
The group is part of 765 men and women who were certified as candidates and will be sworn in as Illinois lawyers at ceremonies in the state’s five Supreme Court judicial districts.
The Elgin program in the Second Judicial District will begin at 10 a.m. in the Hemmens Memorial Building auditorium at the Elgin Civic Center Plaza, 150 Dexter Court.
Byrne will preside over the ceremony. Members of the Second Judicial District Appellate Court who will be in attendance include Appellate Judges Robert D. McLaren, John J. Bowman and Thomas E. Callum from DuPage County, R. Peter Grometer from Kane County, Barbara Gilleran Johnson from Lake County, Kathryn E. Zenoff from Winnebago County, and Susan F. Hutchinson from and Jack M. O’Malley from McHenry County.
All of the candidates have passed the Illinois State Bar Examination, a required ethics examination and were certified by the Committee on Character and Fitness.
The new lawyers will bring the total number of licensed lawyers in Illinois to about 85,000.
The Second Judicial District consists of DuPage, Lake, McHenry, Kane, Kendall, DeKalb, Boone, Lee, Ogle, Winnebago, Stephenson, Carroll and Jo Daviess counties.
The ceremonies in the other districts will be held in Chicago, Collinsville, Springfield and Ottawa.
