LA GRANGE – First-year coach Paul Krick takes over at Lyons Township and is hoping a focus on the intangibles can turn the Lions into a winner this winter. Key graduation losses from last year’s 17-10 team means the Lions will have a lot of new faces, but LT returns a solid trio that bring experience to a young squad.
OAK PARK – Fenwick senior middle blocker Sam Pethokoukis signed a letter of intent to continue her volleyball career at Siena College in Loudonville, N.Y. She will be the second Pethokoukis sister to play Division I college ball. Gabby Pethokoukis, who played for Benet in high school, is a sophomore middle blocker at Villanova.
LA GRANGE PARK – It’s no secret that four-year varsity starters are going to be a big part of the success of a program. However, Nazareth’s girls volleyball team didn’t truly get to appreciate the value of Samantha Brown until she was injured early in her junior season and the Roadrunners had to play without her.
Lyons Township was the only team in the area to win a regional, but Nazareth and Riverside Brookfield both won over 20 matches this fall as part of winning seasons. All three teams had standout players. Players from those teams as well as Morton, Proviso West, St. Joseph and Fenwick comprise the 2013 Suburban Life Cook all-area girls volleyball team.
LA GRANGE PARK – In a game Nazareth coach Tim Racki likened to a boxing match, it was visiting Sycamore that got the knockout blow. The Roadrunners' season ended with a 33-28 loss to the undefeated Spartans in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs on Saturday.
Nazareth’s best-ever boys soccer postseason run ended just short of the state finals with a 2-1 overtime loss to Washington in a Class 2A super sectional Nov. 5. The Roadrunners finished the season 15-8-2 and won the first sectional title in school history.
