LA GRANGE PARK – Throughout the fall season, Nazareth coach Tim Racki praised the team mentality his Roadrunners displayed, but even with that in mind, Will Colmery stood out. The senior defensive end earned a scholarship to play at Purdue, was named to the Class 5A all-state team and is the Suburban Life all-area football MVP.
Three area teams, Lyons Township, Fenwick and Nazareth made the postseason. Those teams have a handful of players on the all-area football team each. Morton, Proviso West, Riverside Brookfield and St. Joseph fill out the team.
The U17 Elite Black girls team from United Soccer Academy in Oak Brook competed in the annual premier Midwest SLSG Girls Fall Classic and College Showcase in St. Louis in early November.
Riverside Brookfield’s boys basketball team went 2-2 at its own Bill VandeMerkt Thanksgiving Classic to begin the season. The Bulldogs lost to Rich Central and Oak Park River Forest, but picked up wins over Kenwood and Brother Rice.
LA GRANGE – It didn't take long for Lyons Township's boys basketball team to demonstrate the current team is very different from the Lions' squads of the past two years. For one, they're winning more. LT went 2-1 against quality opposition in their own Thanksgiving tournament to open the season.
LA GRANGE – Registration for the 2014 season of La Grange Babe Ruth baseball will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 2, at the Babe Ruth Building, located behind the backstop of the north field at Sedgwick Park in La Grange. The park is at the corner of 47th Street and East Avenue.
LA GRANGE – Lyons Township’s boys basketball team has had two losing seasons in a row after winning 26 games each of the previous two years, but the experience back on this team gives the Lions hope of returning to prominence. LT has eight seniors on the roster, and junior point guard Harrison Niego already has Division I offers.
The Thanksgiving holiday brings with it a slew of boys basketball tournaments to start the season. Monday was the first day of games, but most will tip off in Thanksgiving tournaments. Nazareth, Fenwick, St. Joseph and Proviso West tip off this week to kick off the season.
Eight individuals and all three relays competed for Lyons Township at the state swimming meet over the weekend, although none of them made it to Saturday’s finals. Meanwhile, Fenwick won three individual titles and took third overall.
LA GRANGE PARK – Nazareth Academy announce that three student-athletes, Danielle Bartodziej (Westchester), Samantha Brown (Chicago) and Alexia Petrovic (Burr Ridge), signed their commitments to continue their academic and athletic pursuits.
Monday was the first day girls basketball teams in the state could play their first games. Several teams from the area, including Nazareth, Fenwick, St. Joseph and Proviso West, are hoping to start strong and finish strong this season.
Lyons Township heads into the state swimming meet with some momentum after the Lions won their own sectional on Saturday. They scored 287 points and had 14 entries qualify for state. Fenwick also won its own sectional and qualified 18 entries to the state meet.
WESTERN SPRINGS – Lyons Township is offering three pitching camps and a holiday camp this winter at the high school's south campus. LT is hosting a three-day holiday baseball camp for third-eighth graders.
LA GRANGE – First-year coach Paul Krick takes over at Lyons Township and is hoping a focus on the intangibles can turn the Lions into a winner this winter. Key graduation losses from last year’s 17-10 team means the Lions will have a lot of new faces, but LT returns a solid trio that bring experience to a young squad.
OAK PARK – Fenwick senior middle blocker Sam Pethokoukis signed a letter of intent to continue her volleyball career at Siena College in Loudonville, N.Y. She will be the second Pethokoukis sister to play Division I college ball. Gabby Pethokoukis, who played for Benet in high school, is a sophomore middle blocker at Villanova.
