A 20-year-old Lyons man committed suicide on Thanksgiving by stepping in front of a freight train at the Longcommon Road railroad crossing in Riverside, authorities said.
An outbound freight train struck the man on the center track at about 3:15 p.m. Thursday. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office identified the man as Ricardo Lopez of 4042 Center St., Lyons.
Lopez was pronounced dead at about 5 p.m. at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood. An autopsy was performed Friday, and the death was ruled a suicide.
The railroad gates and warning signals were working property, and there is no sign of foul play, police said.
The incident delayed one outbound and two inbound commuter trains up to two hours, Metra spokeswoman Meg Reile said.
