Riverside, IL -

Riverside Police believe the intended target of a shooting early Wednesday morning was the home of Cook County Board Commissioner Anthony Peraica.

Several 911 calls were received shortly after 3 a.m. in the 300 block of Scottswood Road of shots fired. Police Chief Thomas Weitzel said officers responded immediately to an empty street and saw no suspicious vehicles or people in the area. No shell casings were found as well.

One resident reported seeing a dark-colored sedan with a loud muffler leave the area about the same time of the shooting.

Police were later called to the home of a resident who also heard shots and found two bullet holes in the front door, a spent bullet lying on the porch and four holes in a front window. All four bullets were found lying inside the home under the curtains of the window that was shot. The home is located next door to Peraica’s residence.

No one was injured.

Weitzel said investigators canvassed the area and determined that those residents living in homes in the vicinity of the shooting had no reason to be targeted.

Peraica, who also heard the shots that morning, was interviewed as well and said he believed he may have been the intended target based on his law practice or his service on the Cook County Board.

“Mr. Peraica is a high profile individual and well known,” Weitzel said, adding the chances of this being a random shooting were slim.

As a result, squad and foot patrols have been increased in the area and flyers about the incident have been distributed in the otherwise quiet community. Cook County Sheriff’s Police have been briefed on the incident so security details at the County Building where Peraica has an office would be on a heightened alert.

Weitzel emphasized the investigation has led police to believe this was a targeted shooting rather than a random incident.

“Obviously were asking anyone who knows about this incident and has information to contact us,” Weitzel said.
