• Palacky Lodge is sponsoring a casino trip to Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Ind., Saturday, Sept. 13. The bus leaves Palacky Odd Fellow/Rebekah Hall, 9234 Broadway Ave., Brookfield, at 10 a.m. Cost is $5 per person. • On Sept. 15, the La Grange Park Woman’s Club will begin its 55th year of continuous meetings and service to the needs of the community. The club meets at 1 p.m. on the third Monday of each month at the Village Church, 1150 Meadowcrest, La Grange Park. All women in LaGrange Park and the surrounding areas are invited to see what they do. At the first meeting, members will plan the October Salad Luncheon fundraiser. Refreshments will be served. • The Suburban Garden Club invites all interested gardeners to their meeting from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Monday, Aug. 18, at the First United Methodist Church of Western Springs, 4300 Howard Ave. The speaker will be Kathy Vitalo, owner of her small family owned and operated business, Herbally Yours, with her husband Jim and daughter Brenda, past president and member of the Pleasantdale Garden Club in Burr Ridge. • In lieu of the regular monthly meeting of the Just-In-Between Club of North Riverside, members will be meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, for their Annual Summertime Picnic get-together. It will be held in the large pavilion on the grounds of the Village Commons, 2401 S. DesPlaines Ave. Catering will be supplied by Rose’s Caterers. The club will furnish the food and beverages. • The Kiwanis Club of Berwyn is looking for boys and girls, ages 6 to 8 years old who would like to compete for the title of “Kiwanis Peanut Kid.” Under the direction of Peggy Rose Ksiatek of Peggy Rose Academy of Dance and Acrobatics in Berwyn, the Kiwanis Club is hosting its 18th annual contest Tuesday, Aug. 19. The contest will begin at 7 p.m. at the Berwyn Liberty Center, 6445 W. 27th Place. There is no entry fee. Contestants will be judged on poise, personality and talent. Talent can be anything including singing, mime, dancing, recitations, magic tricks, playing an instrument or even making funny faces. The winner will be receive a crown, banner, a $50 savings bond, prizes, picture in the newspaper, and the title of “Berwyn Kiwanis Peanut Kid.” The winner will ride in the Houby Parade, and be featured at the annual Kiwanis Peanut Day and Pancake Day. • The scholarship committee of The Rotary Club of Berwyn has given $1,000 college scholarship awards to the following area residents: Mackenzie L. Dorgan, who will be attending the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and will major in education; Kristen Skvarenina, who will be attending Augustana College and will major in psychology; Peter A. Rizzo, who will be attending the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and will major in material science and engineering; and Jason Dzikowski, who will be attending the University of Colorado and will major in biology. The awards were presented at the Rotary Club of Berwyn Annual Scholarship Luncheon Aug. 7, at Michael Anthony’s Restaurant in Berwyn.
