Westchester, IL -

About 400 local children have caught the reading bug this summer through the Westchester Public Library’s reading club and its unique, fun activities.

Tagged with the slogan “catch the reading bug,” the library’s summer program seems to have been infectious this year, enrolling hundreds of students from preschool to eighth grade.

The program encourages children to keep reading skills sharp during summer months out of school and get more involved with their local library through youth-focused events.

The next such event for participants will be Buggy Giant Checkers, an intricate insect-themed version of the popular game using humans as the pieces. The free, larger-than-life game takes place from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Friday, July 11.

Because this is such a popular event, two games are planned so everyone interested gets a turn on the big board. In years past, the game has seen large turnouts due to the interactivity between players and audience members.

“It’s always been very, very successful because everybody gets into the drama of it,” said Roberta Conrad, head of the library’s youth department.

Students will be divided into two teams, the Bees and the Ladybugs, and will compete for the title of top creepy-crawler.

Due to increasing interest, the games generate a lot of buzz from all age groups. Parents flood the sidelines, cheering on their children, which creates a spirited atmosphere.

“We treat it kind of like a sporting event, but it usually turns into theater. It’s a lot of fun,” Julie Yekel, the children’s librarian, said.

There is a whole summer’s worth of events to come that will continue to have youth readers bugging out. In addition to the game of checkers are reading roundtables, a “Swap ‘n’ Shop” and several movie nights.

Those interested in participating in any of the events may call (708) 562-3573, or simply stop by the library, 10700 Canterbury St.
