Berwyn, IL -

Fort Knox it is not, but a Berwyn jewelry store this weekend will contain more than $2 million worth of jewelry for an estate sale, featuring pieces from iconic stars.

Two of comedian Bob Hope’s tie clips will be up for sale, along with a pair of earrings once owned by opera singer and director Beverly Sills. These join the more than 500 pieces of jewelry, valued at more than $2 million, which will be for sale at  Hursts’ Berwyn Jewelers first estate sale.

“We’ve never offered this to our clientele and thought it would be fun,” said store president Ron Hurst.

Even with companies across the country laying off workers and families slashing their holiday spending budgets, Hurst said shoppers still will splurge on jewelry. Unlike with clothing and home decor, Hurst said jewelry has more of a timeless quality.

Sales increased in his store by 2.9 percent at the close of the third quarter, he added.

“Estate jewelry offers a good value and there are some who love the idea of having something Victorian or art deco,” Hurst said.

In addition to Hope and Sills’ jewelry, a solid gold compact, set with gems, that once was owned by radio star Kate Smith also is up for sale. Hurst said Smith’s name is engraved in her compact.

According to the Radio Hall of Fame, Smith debuted on radio in 1931. Nicknamed the “Songbird of the South,” she hosted an evening program in addition to her afternoon show “Kate Smith Speaks.” The latter featured Smith offering down-home advice on the topics of the day.

Smith made more than 2,000 recordings, and in 1938, hit it big when she introduced Irving Berlin’s “God Bless America,” according to the Radio Hall of Fame.

Sills retired from professional singing in 1980, going on to serve as general director of the New York City Opera and as chairwoman of the Metropolitan Opera and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.

Sills made appearances on “The Dick Cavett Show” and “The Tonight Show” with Johnny Carson. She died in July 2007 in New York of lung cancer.

Hurst’s office manager Joanne M. Svejda said they received a preview selection of jewelry Nov. 6, and some of these items were worn by Hope, Smith and Sills.

About 25 percent of the sale pieces are  classified as Victorian pieces, between 25 percent to 30 percent is art deco and the remainder is art nuevo and more modern pieces hailing from the past 10 to 15 years, Hurst said.

The store has been planning the estate sale since May.

Staff are using a estate house based in Philadelphia, which handles about 300 estate shows a year, Hurst said.
