A new business opening prompted St. Charles to vote in a new liquor license.

J&S World Liquor Inc. had its liquor license approved at Monday night’s city council meeting, bringing the number of licenses in the city from 19 to 20.

The measure passed by a 6-to-3 vote, with opposing votes from Richards and Fourth Ward Aldermen Jo Krieger and Jim Martin.

Martin has been vocal in his disagreement with the passing of a new license. At an Oct. 19 city council meeting, Martin questioned the city’s need for a new liquor store.

“I have a problem with expanding liquor stores,” Martin said. “Why do we need another one ... in a very viable retail location?”

The store will open at 311 N. Second St.

DeWitte said at the meeting that the city wants another liquor store because it’s a new business in a tough economy. He said he wouldn’t care if it was a liquor store or shoe store.

“With all due respect,” Martin replied, “I’d prefer a shoe store.”

The store is planning to open “as soon as possible,” according to Tina Nilles, assistant to the city administrator. She said the owners still need to complete renovations, gain approval from St. Charles building inspectors and obtain the liquor license from the city.
