A bill that would legalize marijuana for medicinal purposes passed in the Illinois Senate Wednesday by a narrow margin.

By a vote of 30 to 28, senators approved the bill, which creates the Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Pilot Program Act.

The bill would permit those diagnosed by a physician as having a “debilitating medical condition” to legally possess “no more than two ounces of dried usable cannabis and six cannabis plants.”
The bill will now move to the House for consideration.

A companion bill, HB 2514, passed a House committee in March, but proponents of the bill expect the House to take up the Senate’s version for debate.
