Winfield, IL -

Visitors can experience old-fashioned holiday celebrations at the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County’s Kline Creek Farm, an 1890s living history farm in Winfield, at several upcoming programs.

During “An 1890s Christmas” house tours Dec. 4 through 29, visitors can see the house transformed for the season, take in the dining-room table set with good china, and learn about specialized serving dishes of the era, such as celery holders and oyster plates.

Guests can also see the goose-feather and evergreen trees trimmed in traditional Victorian fashion with popcorn strings, paper chains, small gifts and cornucopias filled with nuts and candies. Also, they can learn why handmade gifts were considered more special than store-bought items, and see treasures like rag dolls, wooden toys and handkerchiefs trimmed in lace.

Tours begin on the hour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

At the farm’s Timber Ridge Visitor Center, visitors can enjoy a special take on the holiday tradition of the gingerbread house when by viewing a miniature version of the farmstead created in spice cookies and decorated with edible goodies.

On Dec. 13 and 14, Santa will make a special visit to the farm between 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. for “Christmas on the Farm.” On these two days, guests can visit with Santa, and climb into a sleigh to take a picture. At the visitor center, they can make an ornament to take home, stop at a warming fire, and enjoy caroling and hot apple cider as they explore the barn and livestock buildings.

The visitor center’s gift shop offers decorations, Victorian ornaments, old-fashioned toys, fruit preserves and jams, unique items hand-crafted by local artisans and more. All of the store’s proceeds help support the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County and its mission of conservation, education and recreation. Visa, MasterCard and Discover are accepted.

Reservations are not needed to attend these free programs. Kline Creek Farm and the Timber Ridge Visitor Center is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays through Mondays and will be closed on Dec. 25 for Christmas Day.

Kline Creek Farm is located on County Farm Road, one-half mile south of North Avenue. For information on programs and events or the Timber Ridge Visitor Center gift shop, call the farm at (630) 876-5900.
