West Chicago High School officials tightened security measures at the school Wednesday after a threat of violence written in one of the boys’ restrooms was discovered Monday afternoon.
The threat indicated that an act of violence would occur Wednesday or Thursday. By the close of school Thursday, no incident was reported. A rumor that weapons had been placed in the school’s lockers also proved false.
“We know that there have been very similar incidents in high schools in the area,” said Kim Chambers, assistant superintendent of human resources. “We know (a hoax) is a possibility, but it’s something we can’t take lightly. For the safety of the students, we feel compelled to take this seriously.”
Chambers said the measures remained in place Thursday and she expects them to continue through next week. West Chicago Principal Moses Cheng could not be reached for comment.
Classes continued as planned Thursday, but all after-school activities and regularly scheduled athletic events were canceled. School administrators met with the West Chicago Police Department Tuesday, a regular school day, to plan a course of action.
Officials restricted entry to the building at the south end of the school, while students were required to show their ID cards and visitors were required to sign in with a photo ID. Backpacks, purses and bags were restricted from the building.
The West Chicago Police and Fire departments assisted school officials with planning the security measures. Police officers and District 94 staff patrolled the building. Additionally students were required to remain in a classrooms and refrain from wandering hallways.
“Things were extremely smooth yesterday,” Chambers said. “We’re very fortunate that our Police and Fire department have cooperating in a joint effort.”
