SCHAUMBURG – Rob Kroehnke has had a lot of regular season victories during his 13-year stint as the Wheaton Warrenville South girls basketball coach. But few have meant as much as Friday's 48-43 win over highly-ranked Montini to wrap up the Schaumburg tournament.
Wheaton Academy plays Downers Grove North in the Warriors' Thanksgiving Tournament in West Chicago on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2013.
WHEATON – With 17 players within the Wheaton North boys basketball program also on the football team that advanced to the Class 7A quarterfinals, it could take a little while for the Falcons to gel this season. But once they do, coach Dave Brackmann is excited about the possibilities.
WEST CHICAGO - Though its final record might not indicate it, the West Chicago boys basketball team wasn’t all that far from respectability last winter. Now the challenge ahead is trying to take the next step, a process that coach Bill Recchia believes started in the offseason.
WEST CHICAGO – The 2013-14 season is one of new beginnings for the West Chicago girls basketball team, which joins the Upstate Eight Conference after leaving the DVC.
WHEATON – A memorable 2012-13 season brought Wheaton Warrenville South to the cusp of the state semifinals. Now, with a talented core of returners back in the fold, the Tigers are looking to take that final step this winter.
WHEATON – The 2012-13 season was one to remember for the Wheaton North girls basketball team, a season that fell just a few points short of a sectional title. Now, despite losing two of their leading scorers to graduation (Mandy Traversa and Reilly Stewart), the Falcons still have the pieces in place to post similar success.
NORMAL – St. Francis left no doubt as to which was the superior girls volleyball team during Saturday’s IHSA Class 3A state final match. St. Francis convincingly handled LaSalle-Peru for its second consecutive Class 3A title.
WHEATON – It is safe to say that Mother Nature and the Wheaton North football team aren’t the best of friends. One year after its season was ended by a 3-0 loss to Glenbard West on a mud-caked field, the Falcons had to endure rainy and windy conditions in a 16-6 loss to Lake Zurich Saturday in a Class 7A quarterfinal.
NORMAL – Since gutting out a three-game win over Montini in the regional championship match Oct. 31, St. Francis' girls volleyball had made a habit of topping its playoff foes in dominating fashion. The trend continued Saturday night as the Spartans topped LaSalle-Peru 25-19, 25-7 to capture their second consecutive Class 3A state title.
WHEATON – Playing in a steady downpour throughout the game, Wheaton North could never get its offense on track in a 16-6 loss to Lake Zurich Saturday night in a Class 7A quarterfinal game. The Falcons ended the 2013 campaign with a 9-3 record while the Bears advance to take on Glenbard West in the semis.
NORMAL– St. Francis' girls volleyball team made short work of Breese Central Friday night to move on to Saturday's Class 3A state championship match. The Spartans (38-3) will face LaSalle-Peru (35-3), a 25-18, 25-17 winner over Chicago-Payton in the other state semifinal, in the state championship match at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
WHEATON – Even though she didn’t play in the back row a year ago, Molly Haggerty had a major impact as a freshman for the state champion St. Francis girls volleyball team. Now a six-rotation player 12 months later, she has transformed herself into even more of a dominant force for the Spartans and the Suburban Life all-area team MVP.
Players from Glenbard North, Glenbard South, Glenbard West, St. Francis, West Chicago, Wheaton Academy, Wheaton North and Wheaton Warrenville South comprise the team.
HOFFMAN ESTATES – For Wheaton Academy to lose in the state semifinals Friday via penalty kicks for a second consecutive year seemed downright cruel. But a similar feeling of heartbreak from 12 months ago can not take away from what was a memorable 2013 season and two-year run.
