A Hinsdale teen who robbed a local donut shop at gunpoint April 7 returned the money and apologized for the crime the next day before being arrested, Hinsdale police said.

Alex. M. Holmes, 17, 538 Mills St., was charged with one count of felony aggravated robbery in DuPage County Circuit Court Wednesday night, police said.

According to Hinsdale police, Holmes is accused of robbing Dunkin Donuts, 150 E. Ogden Ave., Hinsdale, at about 3 a.m. April 7. Police said the Holmes entered the store, showed an employee what appeared to be a handgun and ordered the store clerk to give him money from the cash register.

After receiving about $200, Holmes left the store, police said. Officers were called to the business about six hours later, according to police.

At about 5 a.m. April 8, officers were once again called to the store for reports of a suspicious person matching the description of Holmes, police said. Holmes had entered the store and placed a stack of money on the counter along with a note apologizing for taking the money, police said.

At about 5:30 p.m. the same day, officers saw Holmes riding a bicycle on Symonds Avenue near Elm Street and stopped him for questioning.

According to Deputy Police Chief Kevin Simpson, police recovered a BB gun believed to be the one used during the robbery at the Holmes residence.

Holmes was arrested and charged with aggravated robbery, police said. Bond was set at $75,000.
