A West Chicago man faces a first-degree murder charge after the death of his infant son.
Investigators say Gustavo Torres-Medel, 25, of 237 W. Brown St., beat his 3 1/2-month-old son about the head early Monday, April 27 morning after the child began crying and would not drink from his bottle. Torres-Medel allegedly grabbed the infant under his arms, squeezed and shook him and threw him into a child carrier, investigators said.
His son, Gustavo Torres-Medel Jr., died Monday from injuries to his head and body.
A first-degree murder conviction in Illinois carries a minimum sentence of 20 to 60 years or potentially life in prison. Torres-Medel could be eligible for the death penalty if a court finds the infant’s death “was the result of exceptionally brutal or heinous behavior indicative of wanton cruelty,” according to the DuPage County state’s attorney’s office.
Torres-Medel is being held in DuPage County Jail without bail. His next court appearance is scheduled for May 19.
