The Village of Lombard recently applied for the silver level award in the “Clean Air Counts” program through the Chicagoland Metropolitan Mayors Caucus, where participants are committed to reducing air pollutants in their towns.

Previously, Lombard had earned the bronze level award, but based on actions it has taken in the past years, the silver level is hopefully attainable.

“Our goal is to minimize air pollution in our own operations as well as throughout the village through public education,” said Dave Gorman, assistant director of Lombard’s Public Works Department.

The village displays clean air information on the Lombard Channel and in the Lombard Pride. Additionally, the village uses no, or low, VOC paints and building materials, has placed anti-idling signs at key locations throughout the village and implemented an anti-idling policy for village vehicles.

The village also owns three hybrid cars and uses these cars for multiple drivers to increase their mileage. Because of the combination of reducing idling and using more fuel-efficient cars, the village fleet’s miles-per-gallon has increased 15 percent since 2007, said Goreman.
