Villa Park, IL -

Today’s column will feature all things Oakbrook Terrace.

A free stage show will take place at 1 p.m. Friday, June 20, at Terrace View Park. “Silly Songs with Dave Rudolf” will let you enjoy music ranging from Jimmy Buffet to Harry Belefonte tunes to some award-winning original tunes by presenter Dave Rudolf.

Want to see your kids (or yourself) limbo, hula hoop, use shakers, jump rope, watch the bubble machine, participate in a conga line or enjoy tons of other fun activities while listening to great music? Then come out to this beach party and plan on a good time. If you’ve never been to Terrace View Park, this is a great opportunity to visit this great location.

The City of Oakbrook Terrace is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and, in honor of that, a free ice cream social for residents and former residents will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 22, also at Terrace View Park.

The city was incorporated in June of 1958 as the City of Utopia. The name was changed to Oakbrook Terrace by referendum in 1959.

The ice cream social will offer root beer floats, desserts, lemonade, free T-shirts, DVDs of city pictures and fishing. A barbershop quartet and magician will perform, and the Lima-Lima stunt team will do a fly-over of the park.

Bob Shanahan, a volunteer member of the Historical Preservation Committee, said “Many items from the city’s history will be on display, including things just removed from a time capsule that was buried in 1988 at the base of the city hall flag pole. Items such as pictures and newspapers articles and items from 1988’s 30th Anniversary celebration will be displayed.

“This will be a great event for our residents. We are really hoping former residents will come out to see how much the city has grown and changed.”

For those coming out to the event, you can also try your turn on one of the paddle boats. They are a fun way to explore the lake. Rental is free for this event. The rental fee per boat on other days is $3 for 30-minutes. The boats are available Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m. Terrace View Park is near the intersection of Route 83 and 22nd Street. Just west of Route 83 is a stoplight that gives you access to parking at the fitness center. The stoplight is at the entrance of the REI store.

The Oakbrook Terrace Park District will offer several movies in the park this summer. The fun kicks off Wednesday, June 25, with “Bee Movie” at the Heritage Center, 1S325 Ardmore Ave.

Bring your family and friends to see this great movie on an outdoor 13-by-17-foot big screen. Concessions will be available. Be sure to bring a blanket or lawn chair. In case of inclement weather, the movie will be shown indoors in the Mario Parente Theatre inside the Heritage Center. No preregistration is necessary – just be ready to have fun. Call the Park District at (630) 627-6100 for information on any of these events.
