What it is
• Sunshine Week is led by the American Society of Newspaper Editors, and is intended to increase awareness about the public’s right to know. Making government more accessible and open is the primary goal.
History behind it
• Sunshine Week was started in 2002 by the Florida Society of Newspaper Editors after state legislators created scores of exemptions of the public records law. Other states followed Florida’s lead, and the American Society of Newspaper Editors held a summit in Washington, D.C., and decided to launch the project nationwide.
Who’s involved:
• The project is open to everyone, not just news organizations. Each year, teachers, students, civic leaders, bloggers and nonprofit groups are among those who participate. To get involved, contact Sunshine Week coordinator Debra Gersh Hernandez at dghernandez@asne.org.
