Close but not close enough
In many ways, Bartlett had a successful season — finishing in the top half of the Upstate Eight, making the playoffs for the eighth year in a row, an offense that averaged five touchdowns a game during the regular season.
But the Hawks also ended 2007 with some frustration, having lost four games by a total of 22 points. That included a seven-point loss in Week 1 to state runner-up Glenbard North (who they’ve never beaten) and a loss by the same margin to Glenbrook South in the first round of the playoffs.
“The playoff loss taught us that we cannot turn over the ball,” Coach Meaney. “If we take care of the ball, and if our defense gets some turnovers, too, we have a much better chance to win.”

Familiarity breeds success
The complete list of returning players for the Hawks would take up a good portion of this page.
Though nearly the entire offensive line and backfield have graduated, three sophomore starters are back along with 44 returning juniors.
“We’re not as big this year, especially on the offensive line,” Meaney said. “But with the amount of experience we have back, plus the summer work we did, these practices are more like simple review than starting over from scratch.”
That kind of insight should pay off against foes like Neuqua Valley, which graduated many offensive starters, and in close games, something the Hawks are all too familiar with.

Not running away from run
The ground game took more than one hit from graduation — the leading rusher, his blocking fullback and a lot of the line.
So with that, plus prolific quarterback Hasenberg and his top two receivers returning, does that mean Bartlett will air it out more?
“We want to continue the balance but it depends on how well we throw, catch and run,” Meaney said. “And it depends on the opponent. Last year against St. Charles North, we threw like five times but ran for 360 yards.”
Meaney is high on Libreri, who’s about 15 pounds heavier than older brother Vinnie (1,364 yards, 15 touchdowns in 2007), as well as Corleon Richardson, with Andrew Gorski and Joey Lehdo fighting for the fullback job .

Family tradition
Meaney is rightfully proud of having led Bartlett to the postseason each of his first five seasons.
“It’s a great measuring stick for any program but we want to get further along in the playoffs (team has never made it past the second round),” Meaney said. “But you can’t do anything like that without quality assistants on your staff.”
Meaney feels he has that with offensive coordinator Mark Williams (been with Meaney for 24 years), line coach Dan Morrison, quarterback/wide receiver coach Eric Ilitch and linebacker/defensive line coach Erik Kramer, who played at middle linebacker for Meaney several years ago .

BY THE NUMBERS
22 Total point margin in Hawks’ four losses in 2007, an average of only 5.5 points per game

35.4 Average points per game Bartlett scored last season before a 14-7 playoff loss to Glenbrook South

99 Total number of tackles last season for middle linebacker Kyle Zelinsky, who also recorded 11 tackles for loss
