Roselle, IL -

Officials in Roselle are hoping to change local driving habits with cameras scanning one of the busiest intersections in the village.

In an effort to reduce vehicle collisions and make streets safer, the village installed red-light camera at Lake Street and Gary Avenue earlier this month, and will begin issuing tickets over the Labor Day weekend.

Cameras will monitor all four directions of the intersection looking for motorists who run red lights, turn right on red without stopping or violate “no turn on red” signs.

The cameras were installed Aug. 14, and police said they are giving drivers a 15-day “grace period” with only warnings given. The warning period ends this week, and police say they will begin issuing tickets Friday, Aug. 29.

The village is also conducting a public awareness program to get the word out about the cameras, and has posted several notices and a list of “Frequently Asked Questions” on the village Web site.

Police Chief James Kruger said this safety technology allows officers to patrol other areas of the community.

“Our goal is to positively change drivers’ behaviors to increase safety at all intersections, not just intersections with cameras,” Kruger said.

Roselle’s cameras are operated by RedSpeed-Illinois of Lombard. Cameras are installed at an intersection with a road sign to indicate violations at the intersection are photo-enforced.

Any violators who go through a red light or a “no turn on red” sign are recorded.

According to RedSpeed, the company first analyzes the recorded data for violations. If the company finds one, it sends the data to the Roselle Police Department, which then mails a $100 ticket to violating vehicle’s owner.

“This is an intersection that I travel through many times each week, and we see a need for more enforcement there,” Roselle Mayor Gayle Smolinski said. “We do not have the police manpower, so this is the next best thing.”
