After more than two years of preparations and delays, Antronio’s restaurant and night club will finally open its doors at 6319 Roosevelt Road on Jan. 27.
Club owner Jose Casco said he planned to open the bar in June, but was delayed seven months because he had to install a new sprinkler system throughout the building.
The club only needs to have a new awning installed as the last finishing touch before it’s ready for its grand opening event.
While the club will host drag shows on weekends and cater to a gay clientele, it won’t transform into a hopping after-hours joint until 10 p.m., Casco said. Earlier in the day, Antronio’s, as the project will be called, will serve fresh Mexican cuisine.
Although other bars have hosted gay nights or served as underground places for gays to meet, Antronio’s is believed to be Berwyn’s first openly gay establishment.
The name Antronio’s is a play off of Casco’s middle name, Antonio, and a Spanish slang “antro,” meaning a hip bar or club.
