Berwyn, IL -

Having raised more than $8,000 — double what last year’s first event raised — just was not enough for Mike Laureto.

He, like the Chicago Blackhawks, had “one goal.”

To have her say “yes.”

As the pre-game party was coming to a close during the Berwyn Firefighters Local 506 second annual “Put Out the Flames” night, Laureto, a Berwyn firefighter and event organizer, had one final raffle prize up his sleeve.

The lucky winner of the final raffle drawing, Laureto’s girlfriend, Madalyn Salamone, was called to the stage.

As Laureto opened the gift basket, the crowd under the tent on Windsor Avenue and Salamone began to realize what was about to happen. With his parents, relatives and hundreds of their closest friends watching, Laureto got down on one knee and proposed.

She said yes, and made Laureto, as Blackhawks announcer Eddie Olczyk might say, a very “happy human.”

Along with becoming engaged, Laureto’s second annual event raised more than $8,000 for the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance’s “I am Me” Burn Camp. Laureto had hoped to raise more than $6,000 for the week-long camp, which provides a safe environment for children who have experienced significant burn injuries.

The happy couple hopped on one of four buses carrying more than 400 Blackhawks fans from the pre-game party to the Blackhawks game Monday night.

The result?

The Blackhawks got burned, going down 5-0 early in the game, but fought back and put out the Flames by scoring six unanswered goals to win 6-5 in overtime.

The win was the largest comeback in franchise history.
