The Berwyn City Council voted to install a new red light camera at the intersection on the northbound portion of Harlem Avenue at the intersection of Cermak Road.
The measure passed by a 6-2 vote at a council meeting Tuesday night, with Third Ward Alderman Marge Paul and Fourth Ward Alderman Michele Skryd voting against the resolution.
“Hate 'em, hate 'em, hate 'em, hate 'em, hate 'em,” said Skryd of the traffic devices. “If they were there as a traffic deterrent I wouldn't have a problem, but they seem like they're just there for the right on red gotcha tickets.”
The city already has a handful of red light cameras scattered throughout the city. Although the devices do generate revenue for the city, state law prohibits municipalities from installing them simply as a source of income. There must be a legitimate safety concern, said Berwyn's Director of Public Works Bob Schiller.
