The City of Berwyn is mulling a 'complete streets' policy aimed at fighting obesity in the wake of a $140,000 grant from the Centers for Disease Control.
The city has began work with the Active Transportation Alliance to create a set of policies specialized to Berwyn that will make the city friendlier to pedestrians and cyclists.
The Active Transportation Alliance advocates for roads that are geared as much towards non-motorized transportation as vehicular traffic. Some common remedies include bike lanes, transit shelters, raised medians and countdown timers at cross walks.
The Active Transportation Alliance is currently working with the city's traffic engineer Nicole Campbell, as well as Kurtis Pozsgay, an urban planer with the Berwyn Development Corporation, to formulate the city's complete streets program. Once a draft is completed, it will be submitted to the City Council for final approval.
Although public workshops have already been held for the complete streets plan, those still interested in making suggestions or influencing the program are encouraged to call Pozsgay at (708) 788-8100 or email Kurtisp@berwyn.net.
