After a dead tie in the April 5 elections, incumbent Fritz Paul-Emile was re-elected to the North Berwyn School District 98 Board of Education by a coin toss about 10 a.m this morning.

Paul-Emile and challenger Joseph A. Festa finished the election with exactly 162 votes each for the final seat on the school board.

Illinois state election law states that in the case of a tie, the local election authority — in this case the Cook County Clerk's Office — shall "determine by lot which of them is to be declared elected."

Cook County Clerk David Orr determined the coin toss' caller by putting both men’s names in a fishbowl. He pulled Festa's name, who called heads. The silver dollar Orr tossed came up tails, and Paul-Emile was declared the election's winner.

He will now serve another term on the school board.
