Slew of top-5 showings for St. Charles gymnasts at massive meet

Members of the St. Charles Gymnastics Academy competed in its first 2012 IGI Chicago Style Gymnastics Meet at Navy Pier in Chicago from February 10-12. The IGI Chicago Styles is the world's largest gymnastics meet with over 4,000 gymnasts and over 200 competing gyms including teams from Bermuda, as well as the entire United States. 

St. Charles' Level 7 team took home top honors with a score of 112.250 while the Level 5 team took third  place with a score of 149.15.The Level 7 team finished in 1st  place with a score of 112.250.

Four gymnasts earned first-place all-around honors: Sydney Smith (Level 5), Taylor Sharkey (Level 7), Claire Ginsberg (Level 9-13U) and Joanna Reale (Level 9-16 and over).

St. Charles Gymnastics will be in action Saturday and Sunday at the BIG Dream Classic in LaGrange.

Sharkey was first on vault (9.400), and second on bars (9.125) and floor (9.450) as part of her all-around win.

Ginsberg won vault (9.000), bars (9.300) and beam (9.550) en route to her winning all-around score of 37.000. 

Reale was first on beam (8.925) and floor (9.125), second on vault (8.700) and third on bars (8.250) (3rd) to earn her winning all-around score of 35.000.

As part of her all-around title, Sydney Smith won on vault (9.225) and  had top-5 showings on beam (seconds, 9.575) and floor (fifth, 9.375). Other Level 5, 9U gymnasts to have top-5 scores were:

Alivia Silvestri (first on vault, 9.000; first on bars, 9.650; second in all-around. 37.450).

Delaney Shaw (fifth on beam, 9.400; fourth in all-around, 36.700).

Teagan Whitaker (second on vault, 9.125).

Emma Moreno (third on vault, 9.100).

Level 5, 10U gymnasts with top-5 showings were:

Emily Sterkel, who was second on vault (9.200), bars (9.250) and beam (9.300) and finished third in the all-around (36.700).

Shannon Rourke (second on beam, 9.575; fifth on floor, 9.375).

Isabella Bernhard was second on bars (8.150) in the Level 6, 10U competition while Veronica Jackson was fifth on beam (9.375).

Level 7, 11U performers with top-5 scores were Sarah Rowland on floor (fifth, 9.600), Samantha Simmons (first on vault, 9.500; third on beam, 9.400; third on floor, 9.525; third in all-around, 37.375), and Eve Meintz (third on bars, 9.475; fifth on vault, 9.275)

Mary Koczwara was fourth on floor (9.175) in the Level 7 12-year-olds competition.

In the Level 7, 13 and over division, Isabel Shaw was second on vault (9.350) and third on floor (9.300) and bars (9.100).

Level 8, 12U gymnasts with top-5 finishes were: Paityn Taormina on bars (second, 9.325), vault (third, 9.300) and all-around (36.150) and Julia Grootens on vault (first, 9.525) and all-around (fourth, 36.075).

McKenna Merges was fourth in all-around in the Level 8, 14-and-over division with a score of 36.600. she was second on bars (9.450), third on beam (9.025) and fourth on vault (9.275). In the same division, Taylor Coppola was second on floor (9.275) and fifth on beam (9.025).

In Level 9, 13U, Ashley McKee was third on beam (9.150).

Brooke Fisher was a winner on beam (9.100) in the Level 9, 14-15-year-old division. In the same grouping, Natalie Casey was third on vault (8.650) and Grace Ginsberg was second on beam (8.675),

In the Level 9, 16 and over segment, Jenny Malacina was first on bars (8.850), third on vault (8.700), fourth on beam (8.525), fifth on floor (8.700) to take second in the all-around (34.775). In the same grouping, Brittany Taormina was second on bars (8.650) and beam (8.825) and fourth on vault (8.700) to finish third in the all-around (34.525). Shannon Sullivan won on vault (8.875) in the same segment.
