Another year, another appearance in the sectional title match and, for the second year in a row, a tilt against a surging York team.
The Dukes entered Thursday's Class 4A Geneva sectional championship game having won 24 of 26 matches, but the Saints put a stop to that streak with a strong performance in the third game of a 25-22, 18-25, 25-19 victory. Last year East won 25-19, 25-21 in the sectional final.
The Saints will head back to their home floor for tomorrow's 6 p.m. supersectional contest against Cary-Grove. The Trojans were one of the few teams to have defeated the Saints (32-6) this season.
After the Dukes rebounded from multiple miscues in the opener for a strong showing in the second game, East switched its rotation in the third, which in turn freed up Jacqui Seidel to help lead the Saints to victory. Seidel floored seven of her 11 kills in the third and decisive game.
There were seven ties and five lead changes early in third game, but after the match was tied at 10-10 the Saints enjoyed a 14-6 run to seize control and set up match point.
Seidel was hardly the only Saints player to make a difference Thursday night. Meghan Niski had 13 kills while Sam Szarmach had seven. Erienne Barry dished out 27 assists while Maisey Mulvey had 13 digs.
