Geneva, IL -

On Tuesday nights at 7, friends of Carol Wehrenberg know where she can be found — in front of the television watching ABC’s summer hit reality show “Wipeout.”

The Geneva resident’s son, Kevin Wehrenberg, is a producer of the show, and she can’t miss the opportunity to see his name flash on the screen.

“When his credit comes across, it’s really huge,” she says proudly.

“Wipeout,” which features 24 thrill-seekers who compete in the world’s largest extreme obstacle course, is “a good family show,” Carol Wehrenberg said.

“It’s good, clean fun, which we don’t have on TV enough anymore truly,” she said. “I watch it, and I just laugh because it’s hilarious the way these people are falling down and getting up and trying again. You can watch it with a 5-year-old, and you can watch it with an 80-year-old.”

Kevin Wehrenberg, 38, has been working for NBC Productions since he got out of college. His titles have included production manager, producer grip, art department coordinator and others for shows such as “Unsolved Mysteries,” “It’s a Miracle” and “Fear Factor.”

His fanbase back home also includes his father, Ray, of Geneva and his brother, Joel, of Aurora.

“I’m very proud of him,” said Ray, whose job for the airlines allows him to fly to shootings for some of his son’s shows. “You always hope for the best for your children. (Success) is one of those things you hope that happens. Both of my sons are successful.”

Kevin Wehrenberg was already making headlines while attending the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. He was cinematographer of production on a documentary that won first prize in the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences 1991 Campaign Against Drug Abuse Film/Video College Competition.

However, the success wasn’t immediate in the network television field.

“He lived in Geneva for a short time after graduating, and the best job he could get with a degree in radio, film and television was manager at Blockbuster,” Carol Wehrenberg said.

An internship with NBC eventually took him to California.

“He met a lot of good people through that,” Carol Wehrenberg said. “But it’s a tough business — you just don’t get in it overnight.”

Kevin now lives in California with his wife and their 3-year-old son.

While Carol doesn’t get out to California to see Kevin very much because of his hectic schedule, she’s rooting for him from back home.

“I’m so very proud of him,” she said. “Kevin is very driven and successful.”
