A 20-year-old St. Charles man has been charged with two counts of possession of child pornography.
Gregory J. Mexin, 20, 1315 Prairie St. Apt. A2, was taken in by St. Charles police Oct. 7 after a month-long investigation by the Illinois Attorney General Office and the St. Charles Police Department.
A search was conducted at Mexin’s home Oct. 7. Police seized a total of three computers for forensic analysis. Mexin was not present at the time of the search, but agreed to meet with investigators at the police department.
Information was received by the Illinois Attorney General Office about a computer located in Illinois that was offering to participate in distribution of known child pornography. The information was received during an undercover operation.
The investigation showed that on May 30, that particular IP address downloaded a list of unlawful files.
St. Charles Police investigators obtained a grand jury subpoena for the account information, which was then obtained from the service provider.
Once the investigation was complete, contact was made with the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office and felony charges were authorized.
Mexin is now free on bond. He was booked and processed, then transported to the Kane County Correctional Facility. His bond was set at $25,000, which he paid Oct. 8. Now that he is out of jail, Mexin must stay off the Internet, the State’s Attorney’s Office said.
His next court date will be at 9 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 22 in the Kane County Judicial Center.
A Gregory W. Mexin, of Batavia, now 51, was charged in December 2006 with five counts of indecent solicitation of a child after trying to meet up with someone he thought to be a 14-year-old girl, which was actually an undercover police officer. Previous to that, he was convicted of asking a young girl to send him nude photos of herself.
It is unclear if the two Gregory Mexins are related. Police and sheriff officials would not comment on the record about the relation.
