Meagan Ahlstrom, 24, of St. Charles was killed in an alcohol-related car crash early Sunday in Morris. Ahlstrom and her mother were returning from a trip to visit Card, who lives in Nashville with her husband, Lee.
Ahlstrom was driving north on Route 47 near the Grundy County Fairgrounds shortly after 4 a.m. when a car crossed the center line from the southbound lane and collided with her car head on, according to the Grundy County coroner’s office.
Joe Olvera, 32, of Oak Lawn has been charged with felony aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol in connection with the crash, Grundy County State’s Attorney Sheldon Sobol said.
The Morris Fire Department extricated Ahlstrom from the car, and she was pronounced dead at the scene at about 4:45 a.m.
She was wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash and the airbag deployed, according to the coroner’s office.
Her mother, Rebecca, suffered seven broken ribs in the crash, Card said. She was taken to Morris Hospital and then transferred to Delnor-Community Hospital in Geneva.
Card said she was scheduled to be released Wednesday.
Ahlstrom was returning home to attend a meeting for a mission trip she planned to take to the west African nation of Sierra Leone.
She was an active member of Christ Community Church in St. Charles, where her father, Leonard, serves as a worship pastor.
Julie Salzmann met Ahlstrom at the church, and the two have been friends for about four years.
“She was the most feisty, tenderhearted person I’ve ever know,” said Salzmann, a 29-year-old Elgin resident.
If convicted of the felony charges, Olvera will face a possible sentence of three to seven years in prison.
