A former Kane County Sheriff’s Department corrections officer has pleaded guilty to drunken driving.
Todd D. Exline, 47, of Aurora, agreed to a penalty of one year of supervision in exchange for a guilty plea to one count of driving under the influence, a Class A misdemeanor.
Exline was pulled over for drunken driving at about 11 p.m. June 29 in the 100 block of South Bennett Street in Geneva.
Geneva police Lt. Joe Frega said Batavia police got a citizen’s complaint regarding an erratic driver. Batavia officers following Exline’s car did not notice anything wrong, but pulled him over to investigate. The situation was then turned over to Geneva police.
Because Exline turned onto Route 25 and into Geneva as he stopped his car, Geneva police conducted the field tests and eventual arrest.
At the time of his arrest, he was a lieutenant with the Kane County Sheriff’s Department.
Exline was charged with DUI July 2 and initially placed on paid administrative lead. His employment has since been terminated.
In addition to supervision, Exline agreed to pay $1,730 in fines and costs, attend a victim impact panel and submit to standard Level I alcohol treatment, which requires 10 hours of outpatient treatment for alcohol education. All conditions are standard for first-time DUI offenders.
Kane County State’s Attorney John Barsanti, citing conflict based on the daily working relationship between the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office and the Kane County Sheriff’s Department, referred the case to the State of Illinois Appellate Prosecutor’s Office, which agreed to prosecute the case.
